For those not in on it yet, the Condo Fucks is actually a pseudonym for indie heroes Yo La Tengo. The name change actually makes sense, as the premise behind Fuckbook [Matador] is sloppy, fun, ripped through garage rock jams; a drastic departure from the (generally) warm, fuzzy Yo La Tengo (Think XTC/Dukes of Stratosphear or uhh….Neptunes/N.E.R.D??). I nearly overlooked Fuckbook, for two reasons:
- I was never that into Yo La Tengo. Don't get me wrong, I like most of what I heard from them (and their last album title was fucking amazing), but I never got the urge to stop and really check out multiple albums.
- The whole YouTube mockumentary campaign just wasn't that funny to me. The fake discography in the liner notes was pretty good though.
Fortunately, after reading a few reviews I decided to take a leap of faith and purchase the album. Man, I'm glad I did. While it won't win any points for originality (didn't the Dirtbombs do an entire album of garage rock covers?), that's not really the point…and the execution makes it worth your hard-earned money. The album was supposedly completed in one take, and it sounds like as certain tracks sound like the Condo Fucks just blazed straight through the end of one song and the beginning of the next. The effect is a just-barely-in-control, almost-live listening experience…in other words, rad. The simple, balls-out approach justifies how short the album is (I think somewhere around 30 mins) and may also sum up why I own exactly one more Condo Fucks album than Yo La Tengo album. Don't think, just buy.
