So I'm reading through a New York Times article (it's free to sign up) about a California two-piece that's been lighting shit up with their performances, when I realize that I vaguely recognize the dude playing drums. After reading the article again, I realize that the dude is in fact Ryan Ulsh, my former classmate, teammate, and friend who was fortunate enough to escape our old-money, dixie college. Nuts.
So now I've definitely gotta give this band a listen right? Turns out, their pop melodies and harmonies buried behind a noisy haze and delivered with garage punk intensity (if you're thinking No Age, you're on the right track) is rad....really rad. Wavves' lastest album, Wavvves, sounds like something that would be released on In the Red, and is the best album I've heard this year. It's available digitally now on Fat Possum (or iTunes), buy buy buy.
