New Sunn 0))) Album - Monoliths & Dimensions

According to the Southern Lord blog, we can expect another Sunn o))) album to show just rub in just how shitty your speakers/headphones are in late May (Summer jams!!). Sunn o))) is one of those bands that I gush about how rad they are, but don't find myself listening to their albums all that often. In all fairness, me recently buying a quality pair of headphones (NOT earphones) has increased how often I listen to these kings of gloom and doom, but I'd like to think the following story has more to do with how often I listen to them:

Everytime I listen to The Black One, I think about when I was 8 or 9 years old at some science museum in Georgia and my class was watching some exhibit on the properties of sound. There was this huge piece of glass, about 3-4 inches thick, and the guide was demonstrating the power of sound. He starts out by playing this incredibly high-pitched tone and ear-splitting volume for about 2 minutes. At the end of the 2 minutes, the entire room is covering their ears in pain, but the glass in standing unscathed. Then the guide played an incredibly low-tone at an equally loud volume. The glass started wobbling back and forth as if it was made of rubber before shattering. When listening to Sunn o))), I have visions of my poor eardrums as that piece of glass.

Anyway, the album is supposed to feature a ton of guests and string/horn instrumentals, but I wouldn't bet on the mood lightening much from The Black One. Needless to say, I'm all about this. Expect more updates as I get my hands on new songs. Until then enjoy this older gem.
