Dub Colossus - In A Town Called Addis

I've been waiting to hear/write about this album for over 3 months, and just finally got the album a few days ago (not that it's very hard to find). The whole concept of the album excited the hell out of me; great, bass heavy, dubby reggae combined with field recordings of traditional ("traditional" ranging from pre-colonialism to 1970s Ethiopia) Ethiopian singing and music. Great news, I wasn't disappointed. In my opinion, this has to go down as the most overlooked album of 2008. Listening to this album's peaks, two words constantly kept coming to my mind: ear sex.

To hardcore music fans, that could be interpreted in a variety of ways, but allow me to expand. There's ear sex in the form of bands such as The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, and anyone of these noise-pop revival bands (The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, cough cough)...but that's sadomasochism. Which I don't have a problem with (wow, that link is kind of embarrassing). The combination of the dubby reggae basslines alongside the Ethiopian music and vocals (often mantra-like in their delivery) make In A Town Called Addis sound so incredibly full and lush...it's ear sex in the form of silk sheets, dark chocolate, rose petals and the like. You NEED this album, because face it, with all the noise-pop being released nowadays, your ears deserved to be coddled once in a while.
