That's more like it! While Good, Bad, Not Evil did eventually grow on me, at times the "cleaner" sound on the album almost pushed The Black Lips into C86-ish territory. I like the Black Lips best when they exhibit the form recorded on their live album, Los Valientes del Mondo Nuevo. That is, unhinged garage rock (or "flower punk" as they call it) backed with plenty strong songwriting chops. Fortunately, 200 Million Thousand is a return towards that direction. They seem to have found the sweet spot on this album, where experimentation and branching out (always encouraged) is achieved without abandoning the sinister element present throughout their early recordings. If Good, Bad, Not Evil was done with a smirk, 200 Million Thousand was done with a sneer. I'm pro-sneer.Out on Vice.
