I know I'm way late on making a post about this album, and I know this man has received enough blog love for five rappers' egos. So why make a post about Olubowale Victor Akintimehin's (that's Wale, Wah-lay, to you) brilliant The Mixtape About Nothing? Because I feel guilty about leaving it off of my Top 10 albums of 2008 (Apparently I'm genetically predisposed to like anything Clipse) and because "The Kramer" is essential listening for everyone, regardless of whether you love rap, rock, or music in general. I've yet to hear such searing, clear-eyed, truthful insight to the "N-word" in any song, period. Furthermore, the exact same qualities that make this song amazing make it an absolutely brutal listen. In a good way of course. Kind of like the uncomfortable feeling I got watch the assassination scene in X, or reading the sodomy scenes in Lord of the Flies, or the last 15 minutes of Revolutionary Road. Long story short, "The Kramer" is the searing highlight to a brilliant mixtape and may ultimately go down as a hip-hop touchstone. So listen, and listen good.Wale's Myspace (Where you can download the entire Mixtape About Nothing for free)
