When I thought of making a mix of my favorite 60's rock songs I found that I needed to edit it down to something I can write about in one post. I decided to cut out some great songs by some more familiar groups like The Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Byrds, Love, Zombies, The Who, Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa, Bob Dylan, etc.. I also omitted a lot of great folk-rock since my first two posts covered that area. We are left with 10 tracks from some of the more unconventional 60's rock groups.
13th floor elevators - Slip inside this house off Easter Everywhere (1967)
Amon Duul II - Kanaan off Phallus Dei (1969)
Red Krayola - Pink Stainless Tail
off Parable of Arable Land (1967)
United States of America - Coming down off United States of America (1968)
Monks - Love came Tumblin' down off Black Monk Time (1966)
King Crimson - 21st century schizoid man off In the court of the Crimson King (1969)
Silver Apples - Water off Contact (1969)
Can - Mary, Mary so contrary
off Monster Movie (1969)
Small Faces - Ogden's nut gone
flake off Ogden's Nut Gone Flake (1968)
Captain Beefhart - Call on me off Safe as Milk (1967)
The following are just a few notes on the bands in the mix. '13th floor elevators' were one of the first bands to use the term psychedelic to describe their music but I find 'Red Krayola' to be far more psychedelic. Although I've seen the 'Monks' labeled as garage they werent some band playing "Louie Louie", they sounded like nothing else that was being recorded at the time. 'Amon duul II' and 'Can' were both german bands that were leaders of the Krautrock movement. 'Silver Apples' are noted as one of the first rock bands to rely heavily on synthesizers. King Crimson's first album was a big step forward for progressive and hard Rock. 'Small Faces' went from 'The Who' soundalikes to creating a diverse sound which included this song that strangely sounds like a 'Neu' track. Finally, I included one of the more catchy songs from one of the weirdest bands that ever was.

this is a good selection...though im pretty sure pink floyd was using the term psychadelic as early as 65 when they were all still in art school
13th floor elevators formed around the same time in 1965. I dont know for sure who came up with the term or used it first (Holy modal rounders?) but they were one of the the major groups.
A lovely, lovely post. Thanks darlin'!
