This album was released last year, and although I just recently picked it up, it has become a fast favorite of mine. You may know the name Mark Lanegan from his work with The Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age, but for the most part this album is nothing like either of those bands. Instead, Bubblegum is mostly a set of dark, introspective, sparse productions with Lanegan's whiskey-tinged-yet-somehow-smooth voice gracing each track. Think Tom Waits-ish, but steeped in a subdued rock and roll aesthetic. I wouldn't even call this singer/songwriter material (even though it is), as it strikes me as more of a new age moody blues album. Damn good.
The first song, "Strange Religion," is a wonderful dedication to Lanegan's mother (you can't resist when the choir softly chimes in right before Lanegan softly states, "Some strange religion..."). The second, "Methamphetamine Blues" is more of a Queens of the Stone Age type rocker (with Lanegan doing vocals of course), propelled by a clicking industrial beat...definitely worth checking out, even if you're a QOTSA hater...and I know there are quite a few of you out there.
