I bought this album for $2, as I remembered hearing a track of theirs from an old Buddyhead compilation and I remembered liking the track...and that I like buying albums for $2. This ended up being quite a steal, as this album is so damn cool that I'm surprised I haven't heard more people talking about this band. The Starvations are another one of those punk/country/blues hybrid bands (I think I'm developing an obsession for this sound) and you can definitely hear the Gun Club and X influences on their sound. However, it seems The Starvations create an even darker atmosphere within their songs than either band...sounding positively hellbound at times...and managing to do so with pianos, accordions, and harmonicas!! Ace. The vocals lie somewhere between Jello Biafra and Jefferey Lee and may take some getting used to, but ultimately sound great within the surrounding din. Apparently, they have a new album, Gravity's a Bitch, coming out this month on Gold Standard Labs; so if you dig this be on the lookout for that.
